On January 14, at The Social Hub Florence Lavagnini, Istituto Modartech presents Mix & Match: The Art of Making, an exhibition that celebrates fashion as an evolving process of research, experimentation, and craftsmanship. Taking place during Pitti Uomo 2026 (January 13–16), the event positions emerging design talent within one of the most influential moments of the international fashion calendar.
The exhibition brings together ten collections created by students from the Fashion Design degree course at Istituto Modartech in Pontedera. Each collection reflects a forward-looking vision, where innovation is balanced with a deep respect for artisanal knowledge. Fashion is presented not merely as a finished product, but as an ongoing dialogue between handcraft and experimentation, tradition and contemporary expression.
At the core of Mix & Match: The Art of Making are four thematic areas that define the institute’s design identity: wool, knitwear, natural fabrics, and technical materials. These themes act as both creative tools and conceptual frameworks, allowing students to explore materiality, form, and function through a personal and experimental lens. The result is a diverse yet cohesive body of work that highlights the expressive potential of materials and the importance of process-driven design.
Rooted in a region historically shaped by manufacturing excellence, the exhibition reflects a cultural landscape where materials, techniques, and visual languages continuously intersect. This environment fosters a new aesthetic—contemporary in spirit yet unmistakably artisanal in character. The collections on display demonstrate how design education can bridge heritage and innovation, transforming traditional know-how into a platform for new ideas.
Mix & Match: The Art of Making offers an insightful look into the future of fashion, seen through the hands and minds of a new generation of designers who understand that true creativity emerges where experimentation meets craftsmanship.
